Understanding Georgia and the Southern Mindset
Georgia is part of what’s known as “The South,” located in the southeastern region of the United States along the East Coast. Like much of the South, Georgia is known for its warm hospitality, strong community values, and traditional manners.
In Georgia, politeness and warmth are central to how people interact. Friendliness, courtesy, and respect are expected in both personal and professional settings.
Using polite language such as “please,” “thank you,” “yes ma’am,” and “no sir” is common and appreciated.
Small gestures like saying “Hope you’re doing well” help build trust and set a positive tone.
A key part of Southern courtesy is how people address one another. Instead of using first names alone, it’s respectful to say:
- “Good morning, Mr. John” instead of “Good morning, John.”
- “Good morning, Ms. Mary Cartright” instead of “Good morning, is this Mary Cartright?”
Even as a conversation continues, the “Mr.” or “Ms.” should remain until the other person invites you to drop it. If a woman is married and prefers “Mrs.” (pronounced “Missis”), simply apologize and switch to using that title.
